Macbeth: The Story Within

Apostrophe

Home
Literary Devices

Definition: the direct address of an absent or imaginary person or of a personified abstraction.

Example:

"My voice is in my sword, thou bloodier villian
Than terms can give thee out!

Thou loses labour:
An easy mayst thou the intrenchant air with they keen sword impress as make me bleed."
(Act 5, Scene 8, Lines 6-10).

Explanation:

The voice in Macduff's sword could also foreshadow the death of Macbeth. It shows the power in the sword that he has over Macbeth. Macduff has no words to say, so in order to get out what he wants to say to Macbeth, instead of talking, he kills him with his sword.
